Biography: Cassie's mother suddenly decides to move them back to her home town of New Salem, Massachusetts to care for her grandmother. Before their move, Cassie meets a mysterious boy on the beach who is being bullied by a group of teens. This is Cassie's first meeting with Adam Conant, with whom she feels an instant kinship. Adam does not tell Cassie who he is or why he is there and after sharing a kiss with her, leaves town suddenly.
Cassie moves to New Salem and at the local high school meets Diana Meade who instantly befriends her. Cassie soon meets Diana's boyfriend, who turns out to be her summer crush, Adam. To maintain Diana's friendship, she and Adam make a pact to never again act on their feelings or hurt Diana.
In the midst of all of this, Cassie discovers she is a witch and a descendant of the witches from the original Salem. Diana and Adam are also witches, as are 9 other teens who compromise The Secret Circle.

Biography: Cassie has been raised by her single-mother, Amelia, until very recently when she died in a tragic fire. Cassie comes to Chance Harbor, Washington (where her mother was raised) to live with her grandmother Jane and attend the local high school. Cassie is noticed immediately by residents of the town who seemingly know more about her past and parentage than she does. Cassie meets Adam at his father's restaurant after meeting his father who unexpectedly tells Cassie that she and Adam are soul mates. Adam's father dated Cassie when she still lived in Chance Harbor and also believed he and she were fated.
Cassie soon meets other students at the high school, Faye and Melissa, who tease her after seeing her instant connect with Adam. Cassie leaves and when she tries to start her car it becomes engulfed in flames. Adam saves Cassie from the burning car by mysteriously extinguishing the flames. Cassie is shaken up and Adam stays with her. Soon after Cassie is reintroduced to Diana (who she met previously at the school), who Cassie finds out is Adam's girlfriend. Diana encourages Adam to drive Cassie home and the two have a conversation about the car fire and Adam's father.
Diana later brings Cassie to an abandoned house where Adam, Faye, Melissa and Nick (Cassie's neighbo(u)r) are waiting. They explain to Cassie that she descends from a long line of witches and that she is one and they want her to join their Circle. Cassie thinks they are crazy and soon runs away. Adam follows and attempts to calm Cassie down and show her what they can do with magic. The two do a water spell and soon become entranced with one another and almost kiss. Cassie quickly breaks the spell and runs away.
